 
After
graduating with a Bsc in Forestry, Tom Collins (MD & Founder
of Greencraft), emigrated to the UK from his home in South
Africa.
As a fully qualified Tree Surgeon, Tom set up his own business
in Kent, which in no time at all was in great demand. The
explosion in custom had come about solely through word-of-mouth
recommendations. Due to overwhelming demand, Tom began to
take on more and more landscaping projects, which eventually
led to him meeting his life-long mentor, John Odell.
John Odell had been in the landscaping business for over 30
years by the time they first met. He had already tackled a
cornucopia of major commercial projects, over the years, including
landscaping every municipal area of Bristol in the 1960's,
as well as many major corporate HQ's across the UK. He expanded
and eventually focused more and more what would become, The
Oast House Nursery. This business, as carefully nutured as
any plant could want, was already synonymous with highest
quality shrubs and trees across the South East of England
and beyond.
Many
people came from far and wide to learn a little of his well
versed wisdom. Soon many more would return with friends and
family. The nursery became more lucrative than landscaping
for John. As time went on, he inspired Tom to begin cultivating
his own plants, and let him use a small piece of land to experiment.
It had always been an essential tool to keeping costs low
in John's landscaping business, and Tom saw economy and quality
as his number one priority.
Soon the two became good friends and John began to pass on
Tom's name to potential clients. As the projects grew, Tom
expanded further and head hunted a crack team of fully qualified
project managers and their groundworkers and ventured out
into the field of commercial landscaping. Tom and his recruits
led to a flood of contracts from many major local and national
companies. Servicing such names as Hillreed Homes and Ward's
Homes across Kent, in the provision of elite estates and affordable
social housing projects.
Greencraft was born, it was official, and all were glad that
we had come so far, but there was still much further to go.
John continued to offer guidance, and took up the mantle of
landscape designer. Soon Roger Todd, one of Tom's landscapers
was recruited as financial manager after wowing his MD with
his financial wizardry and accruity. His talents honed by
a high position of authority with Lloyds TSB, and his degree
in Molecular Biology made Roger the perfect recruit for Greencraft's
position of Financial Manager.
Within another year it was obvious to all that someone was
needed to set up a dedicated customer service team for Greencraft's
growing clientbase. Christina Odell, daughter of John, stepped
into the fold. With her decades of horticultural experience,
(she'd began early, having grown up on a nursery!), and over
ten years of marketing and client liasion experience with
major Blue Chip Corporations, she was the perfect complement
to the team.
